LEE, ROBERT E., General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("R E Lee") as president of Washington College, to G.A. Chase, Lexington, Virginia, 27 March 1866. 1 page, 4to, 232 x 176mm. (9 1/16 x 7 in.). Fine condition.
A little over a year after Appomattox, Lee warmly thanks a benefactor to Washington College for his contribution to the college's literary societies: "In reply to your communication of the 19th just: stating your kind intentions in behalf of the literary societies of Washington College; I have the honor to transmit a letter of thanks from a committee of each society. There is scarcely a feature in the organization of the College, more impressing or beneficial to the students than the successes & influences of these societies; and the good they accomplish under them worthy of encouragement by the friends of education. I therefore present to you, & to those who are united with you, my candid thanks for the aid you propose..."
