It is possible that this unusual sword was used by a member of the New South Wales Corps. Infamous for their role in the early commerce of New South Wales they arrived with the Second Fleet in 1790. Their power and influence culminated in the monopoly of the rum trade and the 'Rum Rebellion' of 1808 when they deposed Governor Bligh. Known as the 'Rum Corps' its officers returned to England in 1810 when Lachlan Macquarie arrived as Governor
