Oval gold box, the cover inset with a miniature of Elector Frederick-Augustus III of Saxony wearing a red-bordered white uniform decorated with the blue sash of the Royal Polish Order of the White Eagle, in a pearl frame edged by a gold band with a translucent green enamelled laurel wreath, on a sunburst motif composed by alternating panels of cornelian, striated agate and pearls, surrounded by ovolos of brown and green agate set with diamonds, within a border of pearls, the sides and base similarly decorated with further encrustations of blue and yellow enamelled forget-me-nots and trompe-l'oeil enamel pearls -- 8.6 cm wide

Lot Essay

Frederick-Augustus III (1750-1827), called The Just, son of Prince Frederick-Christian of Saxony and his wife Princess Maria-Antonia of Bavaria, Elector of Saxony in 1763, became the first King of Saxony in 1806. In 1769, he married Princess Amalia of Zweibrücken.
Two similar presentation snuff-boxes by Neuber were sold in these rooms, 11 May 1982, lots 186 and 191.
