probably Stockholm, circa 1780, the miniature attributed to Leonard Örnbeck

Rectangular étui-à-tablettes with rounded top, all sides set with mother-of-pearl panels with engraved gold mounts, the lid with gold dedication souvenir d amitié, the recto centered by an oval portrait miniature representing King Gustav III of Sweden, within a diamond border, the verso with identically framed gold initial "G"; diamond-set push-piece; inside tablets and a pencil -- 8.5 cm high

Lot Essay

Gustav III, born 1746, son of King Adolf Frederick of Sweden and his wife Louisa Ulrika, née Princess of Prussia, was married to Princess Sophia Magdalena of Denmark in 1766. He succeeded his father as King of Sweden in 1771 and was murdered in 1792.
