Lot Essay

Anne-Antoinette Clavel, called de Saint-Huberty (1756-1812), made her debut in Paris in 1777. Her triumphal participation in the first representation of Piccini's Didon in the title role confirmed her renown. In the present miniature, the actress is depicted singing "Ah que je fus bien inspirée, Quand je vous reçus à ma Cour!". A similar miniature, also by Dumont, is illustrated in Henri Bouchot, La miniature française 1750-1825, Paris 1907, vol. III, opp. p. 88, and for an oil painting of 1785 by Mme Vallayer-Coster, see Marianne Roland-Michel, Anne Vallayer-Coster, 1744-1818, Paris 1970, nr 345.
