Tsar Alexander I of Russia (1777-1825) as a Grand Duke, with long blond hair, wearing a dove-blue velvet coat with embroidered lace collar and cuffs over a gold embroidered grey waistcoat, and an ermine-lined yellow cloak; decorated with the blue moiré sash of the Imperial Russian Order of Saint-Andrew and the jewel of the Imperial Russian Order of Saint-Ann; oval -- 98 mm high, gilt-metal easel frame engraved with the Imperial Russian Crown, the Cyrillic Initials "AP" and the inscription "L'Empereur Alexandre I, comme grand Duc. No 98".

Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaievna of Russia (1822-1892), later Queen of Württemberg, niece of the sitter (her inv. nr 46); Grand Duchess Vera Constantinovna of Russia (1854-1912), later Duchess of Württemberg, niece of the latter (her inv. nr 761); thence by family descent to the present owner.

The backing paper of the miniature is inscribed, probably by the hand of the artist: "S.A.I. Le Grand Duc Alexandre Pavlovitch Empereur. d'après le Portrait origi- nale (sic) de Levitzky 1787. par le peintre de Sa Ma- jesté Professeur Aloys Rockstuhl, Chevalier de Mon-Donjon. 1868."
