GERMAN SCHOOL, circa 1715

Frederick II the Great (1712-1786), King of Prussia 1740-1786, as a child, holding a drum decorated with the Prussian Eagle, wearing a blue velvet dress and a yellow velvet cap with a black feather, decorated with the blue sash and the breast-star of the Royal Prussian Order of the Black Eagle; park, column, throne with ermine lined cloak and drapery with a parrot in the background; oval -- 97 mm high, gilt-metal frame with ribbon-tie surmount and plain reverse.

Formerly in the Bohn Collection (cat. nr 1067, then attributed to A. F. Seyre).

Another version was in the Günther Muthmann Collection, part II sold Sotheby's Zurich, 13 November 1979, lot 39.
This portrait is inspired by Antoine Pesne's double portrait of crown prince Frederick with his sister Wilhelmine, of 1714 (Berlin, Charlottenburg Castle).
