Amadeo (1845-1890), Duke of Aosta, was the second son of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy. After the fall of the Bourbons in Spain, in 1870, he was elected King of Spain by the Cortes. He arrived in Spain in 1871 but had to abdicate in 1873 after having survived a plot organized by the Carlists in 1872. He married successively Maria Vittoria Princess del Pozzo della Cisterna, in 1867, and Maria Laetitia Bonaparte, in 1888.
