SCHOOL OF BOSSI, circa 1820/1825

A double portrait of Tsarinas Elisabeth Alexandrovna and her mother-in-law Maria Feodorovna, both wearing the Imperial crown and the blue moiré sash with breast-star of the Imperial Russian Order of Saint-Andrew the First Called; Elisabeth in white-lace-bordered red dress with ermine-edged cloak, wearing a pearl necklace, Maria wearing a jewel-set white-lace-trimmed mauve dress with ermine bordered cloak; painted ovals against a blue ground simulating lapis-lazuli; oval -- 44 mm high, plain gilt-metal mount.

Lot Essay

Maria Feodorovna, née Sophie-Dorothea-Augusta of Württemberg (1759-1828), was married to the future Tsar Paul I of Russia in 1776. She was the mother of the future Tsar Alexander I of Russia who married Elisabeth (Louise-Marie, died 1826), daughter of the Markgraf of Baden, in 1793.
A similar Imperial double portrait on a blue ground was sold Sotheby's Geneva, 16 November 1993, lot 322.
