The 'edition de Régent', the first edition of one of the most famous and 'bibliophile' French 18th-century illustrated books. The drawings for the illustrations were made by Philippe, duc d'Orléns under the tutelage of Antoine Coypel in 1714 and subsequently engraved by Audran. The book was re-issued several times with different versions of the same engravings during the 18th century. This edition is rare, as only 250 copies were printed. The present copy does not have the additional final plate 'Les petits pieds' by the Comte de Caylus which was not issued until 1728. Cohen-De Ricci 648-9; Sander 1221; Ray French 2
