Album of 64 albumen prints. Circa late 1860s - early 1870s. Each approximately 9¼ x 11¼ in. (23.5 x 28.5 cm.). 56 signed Saché and numbered in the negatives, one signed Saché & Murray in the negative, ink manuscript titles and pencil numbers on mounts, maroon leather (disbound), ruled in gilt, g.e.

Lot Essay

Strong architectural subjects including the Jama Masjid Fort, interior views of the Moti Masjid, King Akbar's Palace, Jahangir's Palace and 'Prince Etmad-Dowlah's tomb' (Itimad-ud-Daulah) in Agra; King Akbar's tomb in Sikandra; street scenes and bazaars in Bareilly; the Well of Knowledge, Burning Ghat, the monkey temple and a Nepalese temple in Benares (Varanasi); an ancient Buddhist tower and detail of this tower in Sarnath; tombs and palaces in Fatehpur Sikri; the Women's Bathing Ghat in Mirzapur; temples in Amritsar; the Begum's tomb and Gooptar temple in Faizabad and Gwalior Fort.

John Edward Saché was a commercial photographer who operated from Rampart Row, Bombay c. 1869. Several members of the Saché family were working as photographers in India from the 1860s onwards.
