Lot Essay

The Mahamakham Tank covers 20 acres and is the most sacred in southern India. It is an important centre of pilgrimage, where the waters of all the sacred rivers of India are believed to merge. The photograph was most probably taken at the time of the Kumbakonam Festival, held every twelve years.
