TWO LACQUER LETTER CASES (FUBAKO)
Edo period, (18th-19th Century)
Of rectangular forms with rounded corners, the first lacquered on the exterior in gold and silver hiramaki-e, low-relief takamaki-e, keuchi, kimpun and okibirame on a dense nashiji ground with branches of flowering hydrangea, the interior and base of matching nashiji, with gilt-copper fittings incised with the bamboo-grass and bellflower crest of the Rokujo family; the second with slightly domed and overhanging cover decorated overall in gold hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground with diamond flower latticework (kikko-hanabishi) and crests, waterweeds and a flowering stream, the interior and base roiro and nashiji; fitted with silver cord attachments cast in the form of bamboo leaves with silver rings

Lot Essay

For the first, there is an inscription pasted on the interior of the storage box dated in accordance with July 3, 1898 which states that this piece was purchased from a Mr. Kawaji.
