1950 LAGONDA 2½ LITRE DROPHEAD COUPE
Registration No. NKL 666
Chassis No. LAG/50/210
Engine No. LB6A/50/266
Grey with red leather interior
Engine: six cylinder, twin overhead camshaft, 2,580cc, 105bhp at 5,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: hydraulically operated drums, rear brakes mounted inboard; Suspension: Independent front and rear. Right hand drive
After World War II and using designs by W O Bentley, Lagonda produced prototype cars which were subjected to exhaustive road testing. However, the model was not able to be put into production until 1949 when it was first shown to the public at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1949. In 1950 a very small number of Drophead Coupes were built. In all, from 1949 to 1953 only 550 2½ litre cars were made.
This particular car was ordered at the 1949 Motor Show (to similar specifications as that displayed and presented to H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh) and was used for three years until the death of the owner's wife. Since that time it has never been used and has a genuine mileage of 34,000 miles. It is original in every respect. The rear seats have never been used, nor has the hood cover. The internal burr walnut, the leather upholstery, the internal chrome etc - are in excellent condition and virtually unmarked.
Accompanying this fine and rare example are its original log book and bound drivers illustrated instruction book, two original jacks, original tool roll and tools and two six volt original Lucas 'King of the Road' battery cases with new insides. There is also the original hood cover in grey cloth and red leather binding which has never been used and is in new condition. Special equipment supplied to this vehicle include roller blind sunshields fitted for the driver and front passenger comfort.
The Lagonda was last run about five years ago and will probably need the original radiator hoses replaced before being put back on the road, following a thorough service. Externally the car is showing its lack of use a little and the chromework on the bumpers will require attention. The paintwork is also blistering off the rear of the car in places and there is a slight dent in the rear offside wing. Generally however this is a superbly original, low mileage, two owners from new example and with a little sympathetic restoration should quickly return to its former glory as a rare, stylish, well proportioned vehicle from the famous Lagonda marque. These very under-rated cars were extremely advanced for their day with rack and pinion steering and hypoid rear axle, features that few of Lagondas' competitors could boast even a decade later. As for performance, a genuine 90mph was claimed by the manufacturers.
