Following the Second World War Austin soon embarked on a series of new models and the first of these arrived in 1947 as the A40 Dorset and Devon, which replaced the Eight ,Ten and Twelve models. The following year saw the introduction of the new A70 Hampshire which replaced the former Sixteen and its engine went on to be adapted for the Austin-Healey sportscar. More stylish versions of the A40 called the Somerset were introduced and in a similar style the revised A70 Hereford appeared in 1950. As an attempt at the sports car market especially in the American market place an enlarged (2.6 litre) version of the Hereford, called the A90 Atlantic appeared.
Initially only available in convertible form the Atlantic was quite a departure from the traditional upright 'radiator' look. The body was made of steel and aluminium with a streamlined front end, a central headlamp and flying 'A' emblem on each wing. There was a column change gearlever, leather upholstery and the top speed was close to 95mph. This example which was last used in 1993 for the film 'An Act of Will' is largely in an unrestored and original condition. The last MoT expired in December 1987. This is a rare and interesting vehicle and merits being restored to its former glory.
