AMERICA - [Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688). Kunyu quantu (Konyo Zenzu). Complete of the World. Korea: ca.1936].

Woodcut map of the eastern hemisphere [America] of Verbiest's famous map of the world, on 12 sheets, joined, overall 1525 x 1448mm., on fine native paper. The map captioned in chinese and decorated with mythical animals, sea monsters and geographical texts. Folding in original blue paper covers.

A fascinating restrike from the 19th century Korean woodblocks of Verbeist's important world map originally published in Peking in 1674. A new issue of the Verbeist map was made, probably from new blocks, in Canton in 1856, presumably to reeducate the Chinese to European geography. From a copy of this map, a Korean edition was printed in Seoul, by Order of King Cho Chou, in 1860. These blocks remained in Seoul, and resurfaced in the 1930's, when further copies were struck. These copies lack the decorative borders of the earlier issues. This example is made up of the blocks from the Eastern hemisphere of this double-hemisphere map showing the Americas and part of the southern continent. Cf. History of Cartography, Volume 2, Book 2, p.254.
