Company painting never developed on a large scale in Western India. Occasionally a European would employ an Indian artist to carry out private commissions, but this was not commonplace in the Western regions.
It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that sets of pictures depicting trades and castes were regularly produced in Western India and sold in Bombay, Poona and Belgaum
