Lot Essay

According to the inscription on the reverse of the relined canvas, the sitter has been identified as Lydia Cornelia van Riel (1744-1814). This identification can no longer be maintained as the picture is to be dated circa 1710 on the basis of the costume of the sitter. An alternative identification could be Lydia van Rijckevorsel, née Slecht (1695-1762), grandmother of Lydia Cornelia van Riel
