Lot Essay

The original, on panel, 29.4 x 24 cm, in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, was acquired in 1710 (see O. Naumann, Frans van Mieris, 1981, I, no. 87). Naumann lists six other copies. The inscription amor is not on the original. It appears in an engraving after the painting, published by Ch. Blanc (Histoire des Peintres de toutes les Ecoles. Ecole Hollandaise, 1863, p. 23). In another engraving after the original by Dirk Juriaen Sluyter (1811-1886), the inscription appears as amor as in the present lot
