The following 15 lots by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel (1726-1798) are prints after original drawings executed using a technique devised by himself known as 'Prenttekening' or 'actypa'. Ploos was heavily occupied with the production of these prints for over twenty years since the technique was perfected and first put into production in 1765. When the project was concluded in 1787, he had produced, together with his collaborators, a series comprising 46 prints of which, according to Ploos's own records, 350 impressions were made of each. The complete series is illustrated and described in Th. Laurentius, J.W. Niemeijer and G. Ploos van Amstel, Cornelis Ploos van Amstel - Kunstverzamelaar en prentuitgever, 1980, and is referred to in the present catalogue by numbers preceeded by the letter 'L'. Many of these impressions were used as gifts or presentation copies, the latter often bearing inscriptions in Ploos van Amstel's own hand on the reverse. Fifteen of the following prints bear witness to this practice, and are dedicated to Elizabeth van Woensel, daughter of the Haarlem doctor Joan van Woensel, who after her father's death was placed, at her own request, under the guardianship of Ploos and is known to have assisted in the production of some of the prints. A lively exchange of prints is known to have taken place between the two artists in the ensuing years (Th. Laurentius, op.cit. p.116). Already in 1776 Ploos dedicated an impression of his print after Willem van de Velde (L.48) to Elizabeth, while a number of the present prints are dated 18 and 19 October 1791. We can assume that these prints originally belonged to a complete series dedicated to her; at least two other prints are known bearing similar inscriptions (L.15 and L.24 now in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam). Elizabeth was the aunt of Petronella van Woensel (1785 - 1839), who was to pursue a career as an artist and studied under Jan van Os (see lot 31 and 32 in this sale) THE PROPERTY OF DESCENDANTS OF ELISABETH VAN WOENSEL
