Lot Essay
Jan Verkade was a follower of Gauguin to whom he was introduced by another Dutch painter Meyer de Haan in 1891. Verkade, Sérusier and the Danish painter Morgene Ballin spend the summer in the Brittany village of Huelgoat and they went to SaintNolff in 1892. Breton subjects had been a central theme of synthesist work, and Verkade may also have been intrigued by Sérusier's naive perception of the people there as simple, pious folk.
