Lot Essay

These candelabra relate to those executed after the model by Claude Michel, dit Clodion by the bronzier Louis-Felix de Larue circa 1780, displayed in the State Rooms at the Residenz, Munich (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. 1, p. 210, no. XXVIII)

The sale of the Aubert Collection in Paris, March 2, 1786, records a similar pair:

Further pairs of this same model are recorded - one was sold by the Rt. Hon. the Lord Ashburton, K.C.V.O., in these Rooms, 19 March 1964, lot 58, while others were sold anonymously in these Rooms, 13 June 1991, lot 22, 3 July 1986, lot 47, and 14 June 1990, lot 12, as well as at Sotheby's London, 25 June 1982, lot 58
