Lot Essay

Karl-Alexander-August-Johann (1818-1901), son of Grand-Duke Karl-Friedrich von Sachsen-Weimar and his wife Maria Pavlovna (see lot 100), married Princess Sophie of the Netherlands in 1842. He succeeded his father in 1853. He was a sponsor of the Arts and Literature, and Weimar again became a Musenhof as under the reign of his grandfather, Karl-August von Sachsen-Weimar. He was the brother of Princess Marie-Louise-Alexandrine of Prussia (see lot 103).
