Vittorio Emanuele I, King of Sardinia, with powdered hair, wearing a silver-braided blue uniform with red collar and silver epaulets, decorated with the blue moiré sash and breast-star of the Royal Military Order of Savoy, the jewel and breast-star of the Order of the Most Sacred Annunciation, and the badge of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus; oval -- 44 mm high, gilt-bronze frame with ribbon-tie surmount

Lot Essay

Vittorio Emanuele I (1759-1824), King of Sardinina, married Maria-Theresia, Archduchess of Austria, daughter of Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg, Duke of Este-Modena, in 1789. He commanded the Sardinian forces against the French 1792-1796. Following a revolt in Piedmont, he abdicated in favour of his brother Carlo Felice, in 1821.
