Bomberg travelled to Palestine in April 1923, moving onto Petra in 1924, Jerusalem in 1925-27, returning home via Paris in the Autumn of 1927. He originally undertook work for the Zionist Organisation which was to be used for publicity purposes but this arrangement did not prove favourable and the length of the trip cost Bomberg both financial loss and the break-down of his marriage to Alice
