ORBELLIS, Nicolaus de. Cursus librorum philosophiae naturalis. Basel: Michael Furter, 1494.
Super-chancery 4° (211 x 150mm). Collation: a-c8 d6 e8 f6 g-h8 i4 k-y8 z10 A6 (a1 title, a2r text, z10r colophon, A1r Mathematica, A5v-6 blank). 180 (of 184, lacking a1 title and b1-2, and without final blank) leaves. 49 lines and headline, double column. Type: 1:83G, 5:93G, 4:64G. Woodcut diagrams, 3-5-line initial spaces, some with guide-letters. (Lightly stained.) 19th-century polished calf over bevelled wooden boards (repaired), with Owen arms blindstamped on both covers. Provenance: Thomas, a Franciscan brother (contemporary inscription); Richard Lakyn (early 16th-century inscription); Owen family of Brogyntyn (arms on covers).
The provenance of this volume shows it has been in Shropshire for almost 5 centuries. Richard Lakyn belonged to the family who owned Porkington (Brogyntyn) from the 14th to mid-16th century, and the Owen family, whose arms are on the covers, were subsequent owners. It was for William Owen that the present house was built in 1735-6. Through marriage, Brogyntyn passed to the Ormsby-Gores, the Lords Harlech. The first owner of the book, the Franciscan Thomas, was also almost certainly English, and thus the book must have been imported to England immediately after its publication in Basel. HCR 5864; BMC III, 783 (IA. 37776); Goff O-74; Polain(B) 2921; Schreiber 4872; Schramm XXII p.43; IGI 7017.
