Chagall's La Bible is one of the very few major Bible illustrations of the 20th Century. Chagall is the only major 20th Century painter, apart from Rouault, who occupied himself so much with traditional religious themes. Ambroise Vollard originally proposed this third book by Chagall in 1931, and the artist immediately travelled to Israel to see the places where the Prophets lived. Together with his wife and daughter he visited Alexandria, Cairo and the Pyramids of Egypt.

'Je ne travaille jamais de tête. Quand j'ai dû illustrer la Bible pour Vollard, celui-ci m'a dit: "Allez place Pigalle". Mais j'ai voulu voir la Palestine, j'ai voulu toucher la terre. Je suis venu vérifier certains sentiments, sans appareil photographique, sans pinceau même. Aucun document, nulle impression de touriste et quand même je suis content (est-ce le mot?) d'y avoir été. Là, dans les rues en escaliers, des milliers d'années avant marchait Jésus. Là, au loin, vont et reviennent vers le mur des Lamentations, des juifs barbus vêtus de bleu, de jaune, de rouge, coiffés de bonnet de fourrure. Nulle part vous ne serez si désolés et si heureux en voyant cette masse millénaire des pierres et de la poussière de Jérusalem, de Safed, des monts où sont enterrés Prophètes sur Prophètes.' The artist finally completed the project in 1952 under Tériade's direction. Tériade issued a special edition of the Revue Verve (Nos. 33-4; see lot 628) in celebration of the publication of this masterwork.
