Lot Essay

These centerpieces are loosely based upon the tripod stand discoved in the Temple of Isis at Pompeii and now in the Museo Archeologico, Naples. This archeological discovery inspired numerous copies and interpretations throughout the Neoclassic period, the most famous being a number of baptismal fonts by Luigi and Francesco Monfradini. One such font was given by the city of Milan to the Empress Marie-Louis in 1811, another was given to the King of Rome in 1813. A related centerpiece by the parisian firm Denière et Matelin sold in these Rooms, 24 May 2001, lot 121.
