Friedländer lists no fewer than nine depicitions of Saint Jerome by Adriaen Ysenbrandt (Friedländer, op. cit, pp. 82-3, 90-1, nos. 137, 140, and 203-4, pls. 118-9 and 145); the present picture is a variant of the central section of the Saint Jerome altarpiece in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Friedländer, loc. cit., p. 82, no. 137, pl. 118).
The pose of Saint Jerome in the present picture is derived from an earlier work by Ysenbrandt's master, Gerard David, in the National Gallery, London (Friedländer, op. cit., VI, London, 1971, p. 109, pl. 226).
