Although none of Ruthart's known studies relate to the present picture, the stag carcass reappears in a comparable work formerly exhibited at the Steiermärkisches Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, which was offered at the Dorotheum, Vienna, 19 March 1971, lot 113.

An important series of works by the artist formerly in the collection of the Marchesi Strozzi appeared recently in these Rooms, 20 May 1993, lots 309-17.
