FRANK GRAY Frank Gray was born on the 27th October in Castlemilk, Glasgow. He was signed by Leeds United as an apprentice from Glasgow Schools in the close season of 1970, turning professional in November 1971. As a left-back he was an integral part of the famous Leeds side of the early to mid 1970's, and has the unusual distinction of playing alongside his older brother Eddie Gray for both Leeds and Scotland. Gray played for Leeds in the 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup final and the European Cup final two years later, but sadly, on both occasions he collected runners-up medals. Between 1976 and 1983 Gray appeared for Scotland on 32 occasions and participated in the ill-fated 1982 World Cup finals when Scotland failed to qualify for the latter stages on (yet again) goal difference. Gray was a Scottish Schoolboy Internationalist and made five under-23 International appearances in the famous dark blue jersey. As an attack-minded left-back (hardly surprising as he originally was an outside-left) his accurate passing and well-timed tackling made him one of the most desired and feared full-backs in the English League. Indeed, it was these qualities which made Nottingham Forest offer (475,000 for him in July 1979. This offer was duly accepted by Leeds and Gray joined a side brimming with confidence having just won the European Cup after defeating Malmo 1-0 in Munich. The following season was, without doubt, the highlight of Gray's career. After having appeared in two European finals with Leeds he was selected to play for Forest in the European Cup final against Kevin Keegan's Hamburg, in Madrid and this time he collected a winners medal. Indeed, Gray started the four-man which brough Forest the decisive goal by breaking quickly out of defence and he was on-hand to see John Robertson crash an unstoppable 20-yard shot in off the post. In May 1981 Leeds surprisingly signed Gray back from Forest for (3000,000 and he stayed at Elland Road until a (1000,000 move to Sunderland in 1985 where he won a Division 3 Championship medal in season 1987-88. Gray made a total of 327 appearances for Leeds United (27 goals); 81 for Notts Forest (5 goals) and 82 for Sunderland (8 goals) The following seven lots were awarded to FRANK GRAY (See also lots 96-125)
