Lot Essay

The drawing was made on Freycinet's second circumnavigation of 1817-20 in the Corvettes Uranie and Physicienne. Freycinet visited Guam from March to June 1819. The largest of the Ladrones or Mariannes, a group of islands in the north Pacific, Guam was occupied by the Spanish until ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Paris in 1898
