Lot Essay

Pitcairn's Island in the eastern Pacific, the ultimate destination of HMS Bounty's mutineers led by Fletcher Christian, was named after the midshipman who first described it from a mast-head in 1790. The mutineers landed at what became known as 'Bounty Bay' and by 1800 all were dead except for Alexander Smith (afterwards known as 'John Adams'). The island's population was evacuated to Norfolk Island in 1856, though a handful of the islanders returned in the late 1850s
