Allan was an officer serving in the Madras infantry who took part in the third and fourth Mysore Wars (1790-1799) against Tipu Sultan. Allan never became a professional artist, however his sketches made during the wars were published as Views in the Mysore Country, in 1794 and made a popular record of the campaigns and the topography of the region.
