The success of the 8hp Midget and the wide price disparity with the 18/80 range led the MG company to develop a suitable replacement for the old side valve cars. In September 1931, the 12hp Magna was introduced - a "light six" in response to the motoring public's desire for smooth running engines. The popular little car remained in production until 1934, when it finally gave way to the new, larger engined 6 cylinder Magnette.

The new NA Magnette was important as the chassis design had changed and because it was the last of the "small" six cylinder MG's to be produced, as well as being the final single overhead camshaft car. The chassis was the first MG since 1920 not to have a simple ladder frame; the sidemembers were wider at the rear than at the front.

The engines of the Magnette were vastly more powerful and durable than the earlier Magna's. They featured cross-flow cylinder heads, a much stronger crankshaft and camshaft and twin SU carburettors. These and other modifications caused the power output to be a very respectable 56 bhp and gave the N-Types a good turn of speed.

In 1935 the NB was introduced. The mechanical specification was altered slightly, reverting to a close ratio gearbox. The bodywork was also altered producing a lower scuttle line than the earlier NA model, and the distinctive front-hinged doors were a feature for which the NB became known. A slatted radiator grill was also used, in place of the wire mesh on the NA.

This particular car is a rare example of an NB open four seat tourer. It is finished in ivory with its original green leather upholstery. The upholstery is rather worn and it was the intention of John Shute to re-trim the interior. A brand new set of trim in green leather is available with the Lot. The condition is commensurate with an older restoration and the paintwork is described as presentable throughout, though showing some signs of age in places. It is fitted with its correct and original headlamps, sidelamps and original instruments and is described as running well. The engine bay is presentable and clean and the car is offered with its original MG registration number.

A rare opportunity to purchase one of the most desirable touring models of the 6 cylinder Magnette range, and one of just 26 NB open four seat tourers known to exist.
