After World War II, and using designs by W.O. Bentley, Lagonda produced prototype cars which were subject to exhaustive road testing. However, the model was not put into production until 1949 when it was first shown to the public at the Earls Court Motor Show in October of that year. In all, from 1949 to 1953 only 550 2½ litre cars were made. These rare, stylish and well proportioned cars were extremly advanced for their day with rack and pinion steering and a hypoid rear axle, features that few of Lagonda's competitors could boast even a decade later. As for performance (using an almost identical engine to the Aston Martin), a genuine 90mph was claimed by the manufacturers.

This rare Lagonda is perhaps not as bad as it first appears and much work was commenced in 1989. The bodywork was removed and stripped to bare metal, the chassis reconditioned (with attention to the brakes, etc), and the engine was stripped and rebuilt at a cost of ¨3,500. Around 75 of the wood frame was also renewed and a wood hood frame is available. The car is thought to be essentially complete. Following the sale Christie's will put the new purchaser in touch with the vendor as included with this lot is the basis of another c1951 Lagonda four door saloon (once owned by Lord Fairfax) without engine and gearbox. Items include a chassis with wheels, bonnet, sides, front wings and cowling, four doors, dashboard and fittings, a set of leather seats and steering wheel.
