Lot Essay

The fretted rail back corresponds to the pattern entitled 'Chinese Double brac'd Paleig' in W. Halfpenny's Twenty New Designs of Chinese Lattice, 1750 (pl. 2). The same pattern was adopted for a set of chairs commissioned by Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 4th Earl of Shaftesbury, for St. Giles's House, Dorset and sold by the 10th Earl of Shaftesbury, in these Rooms, 26 June 1980, lot 39.
