A PAIR OF GEORGE III 18 INCH DIAMETER LIBRARY GLOBES

The celestial globe dated 1799 on a George III mahogany tripod stand on four quadrant supports and baluster shaft, on three splayed legs with brass castors, lacking compass stretcher, made up of two sets of eighteen hand-coloured engraved half-gores, laid to the ecliptic poles, the axis through the celestial poles, with finely-rendered constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures, the stars to nine orders of magnitude, with nebulae clusters and other features of the skies, and labelled according to the astronomer from whose catalogue the position is taken, with engraved brass hour dial and meridian circle, the engraved paper horizon ring showing degrees of altitude and azimuth, compass directions and days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac,
With a companion terrestrial sphere by John & William Cary, lacking stand, the cartouche unusually located in the North Atlantic and dated 1815, with corrections to 1825, the oceans with numerous notes concerning exploratory voyages, the continents finely detailed (much detail obscured by darkening and extensive damage) with engraved brass hour dial and meridian circle.
