Lot Essay

The present topographical tureen and cover formed part of the so-called 'Fiordalisi' service produced in the 1790's at the same time as the similar 'dell'Oca' service, also with named Neapolitan views, was made for Ferdinand IV. The tureen from that service is of similar form to the present example apart from the finial, see the example sold in these Rooms on 3 June 1974, lot 166. The drawing for the finial on the present example is illustrated by Angela Caròla-Perrotti, Le Porcellane Dei Borbone Di Napoli Capodimonte e Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea, p. 443.

A series of dishes and plates from this service were sold in these Rooms on 30 November 1981, lots 59-70; see also Angela Caròla-Perrotti, ibid., pp. 462/3, nos. 400-401 for further examples.
