Liebermann lived in Paris from 1873 to 1878. He was initially drawn by the opportunities presented at the Salon, where foreign artists were allowed to exhibit their work, and from 1874 onwards several of his paintings were included each year to wide acclaim. At first Liebermann was not interested in painting images of bohemian city life, and was attracted more to the work of Courbet and the artists of the Barbizon school, painting many landscapes. However, Ein Winkel im Tuileriengarten was completed towards the end of his stay and was one of his first truly impressionistic works capturing a scene from everyday Parisian life.
