Lot Essay

In 1909 Liebermann bought a piece of land on the shore of Berlin's Wannsee where he built a house to his own specifications, closely modelled on a Dutch patrician country house. The large garden which stretched down to the lake and the walks by the Wannsee were the Artist's pride and joy. The rich variety of colours and the striking light of Wannsee provided the ideal impressionist subject for a whole new series of garden paintings.

"Unvergeßlich sind die sommerlichen Mittag - und Abendessen in dem Speisezimmer, dessen geöffnete Tren den Blick freigaben auf Blumenbeete und Rasenflächen, auf einen Birkenweg und auf den Wannsee..." (M. Eberle, exh. cat. Max Liebermann in seiner Zeit, Berlin, 1979, p.98)

Liebermann's most striking paintings of the 20s and 30s are characterised by a heavily worked, thick impasto reminiscent of French Impressionist painting.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Matthias Eberle for confirming the authenticity of this work and providing us with probably provenance details for the painting.
