Lot Essay

Marie-Nicole, Antoine Vestier's daughter, must have painted the present miniature shortly before her marriage to the miniaturist François Dumont on 25 August 1789. Signed miniatures by her hand are extremely rare and Anne-Marie Passez (Antoine Vestier, Paris, 1989, pp. 40-41) mentions only two other examples, one in the collection of the Hermitage (inv. no. 2080), and another one, a profile as the present miniature, in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.
