A CARVED BANDED AGATE TALISMAN
PERSIA, PART DATED AH 945/1538-9 AD

Of oval form, the face carved with a central rectangular panels of three lines of elegant naskh divided by minor bands of leaves each inscribed with a word, the lunettes at each end carved with rosette sprays, each petal also carved with a word, in a border of elegant naskh, the reverse with four panels of extremely elegant nasta'liq containing a quatrain and dated 945, (cracked through, slight missing chips), later mounted in white metal and set with garnets, opals and pearls, attachment loops above (one stone missing)

Inscribed on the reverse: invocations in the name of 'Ali and the date AH945/1540AD.
