A 20-BORE SPANISH MIQUELET-LOCK SPORTING GUN FOR A LADY OR A BOY
BY SALAVADOR ZENARRO, MADRID, DATED 1786
With two-stage barrel retained by two later spring-held iron bands and with chiselled girdle, gold spider fore-sight within gold-inlaid scrolls and dots, and engraved iron ring back-sight, the octagonal breech inlaid with gold scrollwork on either side of the gold-inlaid inscription 'Salvador Zenarro En Madrid. Ano De 1786. Los Cuatro Hermanos' and struck with two gold-lined marks (similar to Neue Støckel 7226, 7227) with decorative marks above, one gold-inlaid, the other gold-lined, waved gold line, and gold-lined touch-hole, shaped tang engraved with flowers and foliage on a punched ground, signed flat bevelled lock engraved with flowers, scrolls and shells on a punched ground and with further gold-lined punzón, figured walnut full stock carved with foliage in relief behind the barrel tang (fore-end tip missing, fore-end repaired, minor chips and bruises), fluted Madrid-style butt, iron mounts comprising scrolled trigger-guard engraved en suite with the lock and with further punzón, the finial chiselled in relief as a stylised scallop, and rounded heel-plate engraved en suite, retaining its original wooden ramrod with turned ivory tip (barrel with light pitting, side-nails and barrel tang screw replaced)
