A VERY FINE PORTUGUESE 14-BORE SILVER-MOUNTED MIQUELET-LOCK SPORTING GUN

With sighted two-stage Spanish barrel retained by two spring-held engraved silver barrel bands and with silver spider fore-sight, chiselled girdle against a gilt ground, and octagonal breech inlaid with silver flowers, scrolls, birds, and an urn and struck with six gold-lined marks, two of them the punzónes of Joseph Bustindui of Madrid and Valencia (Neue Støckel 137, 138), gold-lined touch-hole, shaped silver back-sight engraved with scrollwork and with acorn foward finial, engraved grooved tang, border engraved lock with large roller on the mainspring and pierced and engraved fence to the cock and pan, the plate struck with the maker's mark of Manuel Do N. Gomes of Lisbon (Neue Støckel 7516), the steel signed and dated, figured walnut full stock, fluted butt of characteristic Lisbon type carved with scrollwork in relief at the barrel tang, border engraved silver mounts, the trigger-guard and the tang of the butt-plate each with acorn finial, silver trigger-plate, horn side-nail washers, and horn-tipped ramrod
