With three-stage sighted barrel signed on the top flat of the breech, rounded lock with raised border and chiselled details, figured walnut half-stock, pineapple chequered grip, engraved brass mounts including trigger-guard with acorn finial, brass ramrod-pipes, and later ramrod (iron parts with some light pitting, fore-end cap missing), the barrel and lock early 18th Century, the remainder late 18th Century

Lot Essay

There is no record of a gunmaker by the name of I. Fox, but there may possibly be some connection with John Twigg's family, as his grandfather and uncle were each called John Fox. See W. Keith Neal & D.H.L. Back, Great British Gunmakers 1740-1790, pp. 62-3
