Lot Essay

A table after this design, in walnut with inlaid carved and chamfered decoration, the legs tied by brass tracery and inset with glass cabochons, was in the Handley-Read Collection and is now at the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Museum, Bedford. The exhibition catalogue, Victorian and Edwardian Art: the Handley-Read Collection, (Royal Academy, London, 1972, no. B 11), cites similar designs by the architect S.S. Teulon and the cabinet-maker C.F. Hayward.
'W. Gibbs Esq.' may be identified as William Gibbs (1790-1875) head of the great west country merchant trading firm, who was responsible for the fantastic neo-Gothic Tyntesfield, a few miles west of Bristol.
