Lot Essay

Ten Kate, who was Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and Court Painter to the King of Holland, was employed by Queen Sophia of Holland (1818-1879), first wife of William III (reigned 1849 to 1890) to make a number of interior views of the Plein Palace in the Hague in 1849 (now in the Orange Nassau Museum, The Hague). This present watercolour may show an interior in one of the Dutch royal palaces.
