INDENTRegimental Sergeant Major Henry G. Baker, D.C.M. (1826-1910), whose son and grandsons also served in the 61st. Regiment, was born in Bethnal Green, London; joined the 95th. Regiment, 1842; transferred to the 61st. Regiment, 1844; Corporal 1845; Sergeant 1848; served during the Punjab Campaign, 1848-49 and was present at the passage of the Chenab; took part in the Battles of Sadoolapore Chilianwalla and Goojerat; served with Major General Sir W.R. Gilbert's Field Force in pursuit of the enemy to the Khyber Pass, March 1849 and with the Expedition to Kohat, February 1850; served during the Indian Mutiny and was present during the repulse of sorties from Delhi, 4th., 9th. (wounded in the thigh), 18th. and 23rd. July, 1857; took part in the assault and capture of the city where the 61st. Regiment stormed the magazine, defended by mutineers from the 41st. Native Infantry, whose Colours were captured by Sergeant Major Baker, 16th. September, 1857 (D.C.M., Horse Guards Authority dated 29.11.1858.; offered a Commission for his gallant service. Baker later recalled "I myself fractured the seat of my trousers in getting up the breach into Delhi. It would not have looked very nice if I had my photo taken then with my behind exposed to view for two days...I had the regimental colour of the 41st. for a number of years but gave it to one of my sons at the request of the Regiment"); Sergeant Major 1858 (Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, 1860); Sergeant Major, 15th. Middlesex Volunteers (London Scottish), 1862-72; Assistant Executive Officer, National Rifle Association, 1862-81; Yeoman Warder, Tower of London, and Yeoman of the Queen's Bodyguard, Yeoman of the Guard, 1866. Sergeant Major Baker was the oldest serving Yeoman of the Guard on his death, aged 84, May 29th., 1910.

A total of 17 Distinguished Conduct Medals awarded for the Indian Mutiny, as against approximately 180 Victoria Crosses for the same campaign. A unique award to the 61st. Regiment.
