Lot Essay

INDENTLieutenant A. Long (1878-1924) served during the South African War, 1900-02 and was present at the Relief of Kimberley and the actions at Paardeberg and Driefontein; served during the Great War, 1914-19; during the first battle of Ypres, Sergeant Major Long occupied the upper storey of one of the houses near the barricade across the Menin Road at Veldhoek. He accounted for many of the enemy as they advanced up the road, until forced to retire under heavy machine-gun fire. (Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette, 7.2.1915.; Order of St. George Fourth Class, London Gazette 25.8.1915.; Wounded, 1914); Lieutenant 1917. Lieutenant Long retired, after 25 years service, 1921
